POP babe Britney Spears’s mum first saw signs of her daughter’s meltdown as early as four years ago, she revealed yesterday.

Lynne Spears was speaking on TV about the unbearable strain of watching her daughter’s public collapse.

Brit, 26, and childhood friend Jason Alexander wed in January 2004 in Las Vegas, but annulled it 55 hours later.
And it was this that first alerted Lynne, 53, that something was seriously wrong.

Speaking to Lorraine Kelly on GMTV, she also said it had been very difficult watching Britney shave her head in February last year.

Lynne said: “I think there comes a time in a young adult’s life when they want to live their own life.

“Similar to a child that goes to college and they don’t really come home a lot.”

In recent months Spears has enjoyed a significant comeback.

She is to play the London O2 Arena next June and is set for her first UK TV show in five years on tomorrow’s X Factor on ITV1.

Her new album Circus is released on Monday.
