Major revamp' planned for 'Strictly'

Strictly Come Dancing will be revamped after losing its ratings lead over The X Factor this year, according to a report.

The BBC One ballroom show had consistently proved to be more popular than ITV1's talent search in previous seasons, but audience figures show that it has trailed behind its rival this year.

Show producers are now said to be planning a major shake-up, which would see a greater focus on younger celebrities and a return to the live Saturday night results format.

A source told the News of the World: "This has been the most boring Strictly series. There's real concern viewers have turned away and won't come back, so next year the show will be completely revamped.

"X Factor has always been very good at reinventing itself. Strictly has stayed traditional but this series it just looked old and tired."

Last year, executives decided to pre-record the results episodes for broadcast on Sunday nights each week. However, the show's team apparently now believe that the move was a mistake.

The insider explained: "The problem with delaying the results until Sunday is that the show loses a lot of buzz. With X Factor there's an excitement about finding out who's going to go that night."

Tom Chambers and Camilla Dallerup were voted as the programme's latest winners in the live final last night.

What do we think?

I think -

1) Drop the Sunday reveal show; most people already know who's been eliminated

2) Get rid of the dance off completely or at least drop it at the two dance stage. Let the GBP choose not the judges.

3) The judges scores should not be weighted.
If you look at the scores in last few weeks , Lisa was clearly being overmarked thus guaranteeing her a place near the top of the leader board and a good shot at going through to the next week. The judges should not be able to influence the vote to such an extent.

Yes, agree with most of the comments by Girth above.
The results show on Sunday isn't the same 'buzz' that you get with XF, WHERE THE RESULTS ARE GIVEN ON THE SATURDAY.
As for the judges, they have been heavily biased toward both rachel AND lisa for weeks.........ever since they both started to fall into the bottom 2. Their marks have been ridiculously high....throwing 10's at them like confetti to make sure they were at the top of the leader board.
Well the public saw through it. They were outraged by the John Sergeant treatment, and then the criticism of Tom increased as he became the big threat to rachel, who was the judges pet.
Neither lisa or rachel would have been in the top 5 if it had been a STRICTLY PUBLIC VOTE. WHICH IT SHOULD BE FROM NOW ON!!

Yep, agree with the point there about the Sunday results show, I've been watching since the start of the 4th series when it was at its best - the results shows were on the same night and the format was exciting. Now we know what's coming next and it's all very boring. Also, I heard it is highly likely Bruce will leave and not be back for the 7th series (seeing as he is 80), so Strictly will need to find someone else who has similar presenting characteristics as Bruce. I feel that if Bruce doesn't return then the viewers will leave in their thousands and even millions, so I would advise the BBC to try and keep him.

One more change.

Get rid of Tess Daly. She's puts her foot in her mouth too many times considering the salary she gets.

This is true. Thing is though, I cannot think of anyone who can sufficiently fill his shoes. If they go for Graham Norton many veiwers will switch off, if they go for Vernon Kay even more viewers will switch off, if they go for Anton Du Beke I will definitely switch off.

Yeah it's quite a hard one as to who would take over. Personally, I like Tess and Claudia is fine doing It Takes Two but maybe Vernon Kay because Tess is his wife and he is quite entertaining and has experience doing Saturday night TV (Family Fortunes *shivers*) other than him I can think of no other decent replacement.

BigSister 23-12-2008 11:31 AM

Yeah def get rid of the sunday show and also the dance off as well

Claudia is brilliant on ITT - I love Claudia - but Tess, for someone who does so little makes an awful lot of mistakes. Did you see her get the leader board totally wrong on Saturday? Tess is a bit of an empty vessel and as someone on DS so wonderfully put it 'Her smile never quite reaches her eyes'. In other words she seems a bit fake and false.

Yeah, Tess makes mistakes, I saw when she messed up the leaderboard on Saturday and a few weeks ago when (I think it was Tom) got 36 but the computer put it as 37 she couldn't seem to handle that! I don't really think she is fake, someone who is definitely fake is Lisa argggggggggh she smiled like a crazed woman on drugs when she came out to do her dances and then she cried at the smallest of things going wrong LOL.:laugh:Davina makes lots of mistakes when presenting BB but people still love her for what she does best.

GiRTh 23-12-2008 11:51 AM

You're right about Lisa. All the tears got on our nerves in the end. She'd go from ecstatically happy to tears in a matter of seconds. She was so good at that.

Some speculate that some of the pros may not come back next year. Many of them are in their thirties so they may be thinking about moving on. Anton and Erin are two who many think are not coming back. Erin's getting married next year and the way she took Austin elimination tells us that there was more going on than just an exit from a dance contest. Anton just has so many other thngs going he may not have time for Strictly.

Erin would be a big loss for the show because she's been doing Strictly right from the start (I think). However, Anton is an absolute idiot and a buffoon in my eyes. He had a tiny amount of dignity left and then he did Hole In The Wall - making him equivalent to a ****, so I don't care if he goes. Are you trying to say that Austin and Erin are getting married or that Erin is emotional that she went out because she thinks it will probably be her last series?

LOL Austin is already married.

On ITT on the Monday after Austin was eliminated Erin sobbed her eyes out and because she has a reputation for being a little cold and unfeeling many thought the sudden upturn in emotions may be due to something else. Many have speculated she may not return after she gets married.

Ok, sorry about that LOL.:blush2: [/quote]No problem.

One more change - The judges are not allowed to talk to the press apart from ITT. The judges slagging off John Sergeant on GMTV and Breakfast time, and telling the public not to vote for him probably got him a few more votes each week.

Excellent, people are so lucky that John Sergeant left the competition because I heard he got twice as many votes as everyone else put together on the last week he was in the competition - meaning he would have almost certainly won!

GiRTh 23-12-2008 12:24 PM

Apparently there's been another cock up with the scores in the Christmas Special .

GiRTh 23-12-2008 12:27 PM

Someone on DS was at the taping of the Christmas Special and has said 4 of the 6 couples were tied at the top of the leader board. Good lord.

robb 23-12-2008 01:09 PM

At least that's just for fun........unless rachel and lisa cut up rough again!!
John Sergeant did benefit from vile judges' comments of course.
As for the pro's, get rid of that Jordan bloke by all means, but defo KEEP my 3 girlie faves......Ola,Kristina.......and Camilla!! :hello:

GiRTh 23-12-2008 01:19 PM

Alot of people dont like Ola; presumably because she's married to James and just about everybody thinks he's a knobhead. If we ever see him pass the mid way point then maybe he would have the right to be as mouthy as he is.

I'd like to see Kristina and Brian stay but as for Erin, Anton, Camilla and the rest of the original brigade, I think it may be time to put them out to pasture.:spin2:

That is why I think that the judges should all score out of 20 for more precise scores.
