If CBB6 Gets Amazing Ratings, Can It Save The Future Of Big Brother UK?

All In The Title.. Discuss! :)

Hugo 23-12-2008 11:39 PM

It won't get amazing ratings - fact.
So no.

Spike 23-12-2008 11:42 PM

Defiantly. I have said it loads of times, a great CBB6 which gets good ratings will help the ratings for BB10. If we then get a great BB10 the show will be renewed by C4.
CBB6 will be attracting some viewers who didn't watch in the summer so it is the last possible chance to win viewers back

DamonJ 23-12-2008 11:43 PM

No.
The show has no credibility anymore.
After being medicore for the last few years, its reputation has been ruined.

Fom 23-12-2008 11:43 PM

To have good viewings it will need to be controversial, BB wont even let it get to that stage.

MrGaryy 24-12-2008 12:06 AM

No it's a dying format, regardless of ratings.

But don't be too worried, BB is C4's biggest rating's puller, and as of now they have no show to replace it. Until they do, BB isn't going anywhere.

LemonJam 24-12-2008 12:08 AM

It needs decent housemates and C4 needs to stop worrying about ofcom.

I think that it's make or break now for Channel 4. If they plan out this series vigourously from start to end, knowing all things that will happen over the 3 week period and knowing that no 'controversy' will occur then we should be in for a fantastic series. Also, the viewing figures will really depend on WHO they will be putting into the house, and not what type of personalities will be there... so they need to be aiming really high. I believe that if they get some big names like Houston in there then alot more people will tune in.

If, on the other hand, things do take a turn for the worst... expect BB10 to have the worst viewing figures of all past series as I think alot of even die-hard BB fans are really starting to get tired of the crap the producers try to pull with them.

They should plan the series but they shouldn't try to manufacture an outcome like they seem to have been doing in recent years. Regardless of what they do to salvage the show, the format is getting old and they're never going to pull in the nine/ten million they used to.

30stone 24-12-2008 12:56 AM

If they put a big celeb in then yes otherwise no..

Conor 24-12-2008 01:02 AM

The show died a long time ago in C4's eyes. They can't be bothered with the format any more and its pretty obvious that there's regret in signing up to 4 more series of the show. (CBB6, BB10, CBB7, BB11) Gradually the shows running has been stripped back with live feed decentigrating more each series, BBBM/LB casting gradually getting worse a tired format that they havent bothered updating when they easily could and a repeat of many past twists.

The ads are pretty effortless too. The formats been basicly the same since BB4/5. BB3 has perfect C4/E4 advertising and BB:CH took a brave decision that ended well with viewers too. It's right infront of the producers/C4's faces that original/unique advertising works best. They've even done it themself, so why can't it be done again! The producers are coming across as scared of reluctant to stay even 2cm from the current format.

The show will probably be in such a mess by the time the contract next runs out that ITV or Sky won't even want to take it on.

So basicly what I'm trying to say is that even if ratings pick up again, I don't think it matters. BB's to deep in its own troubles to gain popularity again unless the producers work incredibly hard.

Here's an interesting quote from another forum:

As Channel 4 are possiblity killing off its own national insituation. This is what the final BB may possiblity be like in 2010 BB XI (11)

- Possiblity final ever series, Shown on E4 only.
- No live feed at all, No streaming on the internet, Only E4 showing would be the daily show, BBLB, BBBM and launch, eviction and final.
- Daily highlights show at graveyard slots such as 12.30am or later just like the snooker on BBC2 is at the moment.
- Eviction show and final maybe even be recorded some 2/3 hours before tramission with the programme reduced and been shown at the same time at least.
- Final possiblity would have 7 out the same evening on a 1 hour show with just 3 questions from the host (which may not even be Davina, It may be Keith Lemon or some crap host)
- Marcus Bently being ditched from narrating the daily show and replaced by some T4 bimbo.
BBLB and BBBM still on with lesser known and maybe crappier hosts than George Lamb. Another Zezi type may be on too. -Lesser promos on C4/E4 and only the TV magazines will mention the return or a short article on some newspapers.
- The media may even be banned to help prevent C4's image. -So maybe no more photo shoots ect.
Shortest series ever, Maybe just 46 days. Phone votes may only be on for few hours too and close at midnight as one occasion did during BB IX.
[/rant]

There is a bit of hope though. Endemol recently payed for an experimental version of the show for the Croatian producers where the house was built in another country (Thailand) and the housemates have a much bigger house to explore (Talking easily 4X the size of our bigger houses eg BB3/9) with a garden that has no back wall and two resident elephants. The housemates are also able to talk part in tasks outside of the house in the city as well as being able to explore it. This is an interesting concept as there are alot of major Big Brothers, the ones that actually make Endemol some money (UK, US, Germany, Italy, Spain, Brazil) on their last legs. It looks like by running this test series Endemol producers are planning to save the concept by introducing a new format. Even more interestingly is that quite a few of the casting/production team was from the UK, Germany/Austria and Spain. (Some of the most suffering series)

Rory 24-12-2008 03:04 AM

No. CBB5 got some pretty decent ratings for a celebrity series, and that practically was the death of Big Brother.

Ratings won't come in unless there's controversy, and controversy would only threaten the gentle state that Big Brother is in now. It either needs to break the mould and take a radical approach to the series (which I highly doubt would come during a celebrity series) and see how that works OR watch its slow, painful death unfold.

Okay, I see you clearly used to like BB when it was at its best (BB5, BB6, CBB4, BB7) but if you were a REALLY MASSIVE fan like the 2 million or so still in the UK then you would just love BB for what it is and just keep your hopes up. Conor, you never know but if Paris Hilton went on CBB6 then the viewers would just rocket and if C4 could bring together a mixed bunch of interesting HM's then they could make a decent series with some good twists then they could win viewers back for BB10 and heavily promote that (starting adverts a month before launch). Lets say they could bring in 7-8 million viewers for BB10 then have a series average of 5 million then it would be right back on track. What you're saying is that C4 are giving up on it - the truth is they're absolutely not but I agree when you say it needs a refreshed format and advertising that draws the viewers in. It's not all doom and gloom if we can have one successful series then that could turn BB's past around and keep on going for several years ahead of the current contract deadline in 2010.

Tom 24-12-2008 09:51 AM

The live feed has gone because long gone are the days when Big Brother was something new- instead they now want you to watch the highlights. It still gets good figures for Channel 4 so its not going anywhere because they will milk the show for all its worth, until its well below 1m. Even then it will probably be relegated to E4 before its axed.

CBB6 is their last chance to get viewers for BB10. If CBB6 is a fail then the end is in sight

But there is no way to get high ratings unless something controversial happens (and that would be bad too), the only thing that we could hope for is a major celebrity going and hope that the ratings are high, but there is NO way that CBB6 will beat BB1-BB7 and CBB1-CBB5 in ratings... i cant imagine those people that watched in the early years coming back.

I Believe so! I really love BB and the format, It Grips me! I Love watching it Live!

There could also be good controversy though. Like BB5/CBB3 style.

Basically, aswell as Emma and Michelle not actually being evicted and the tasks they had to do in general. And in CBB3 having Jackie enter the house because of Brigittes status in her life and the glass window in the bathroom. Also alot of the housemates from those series were chosen just to wind people up as the producers knew they would cause controversy. (Nadia, Victor, Michelle, Emma, Kitten, John, Jackie...)

Brekkie 24-12-2008 01:22 PM

I've always said this series is make or break for the show, but I'm already convinced it'll be a flop due to a poor line up, poor promotion and some stupid decisions by C4.

However, in the event it is a success and BB10 is deemed a success I don't think that'll be enough to secure it's future. C4 will probably be more open minded to it, but they'll want it to sustain it's success more than one year before committing any further.

But even if CBB6 and BB10 are both seen as a flop, they wont cancel it until they find something to replace it which could take a while. It will be hard for a Channel 4 show to find a show that could replace it and sustain and audience of 3-4m.

Clearly you haven't seen the ratings for Channel 4 in general, and the huge boost that Big Brother gives them in the summer. Channel 4 were hurt quite a lot with the absense of CBB in 2008, so I hardly think they're going to axe the main show in a hurry. It would be the equivalent of ITV axing Corrie.

Big Brother has now settled into an entertainment show throughout the summer, then again for a short time in the winter. Gone are the days when it was a huge national event that everyone religously followed for 10 weeks.

MR.K! 24-12-2008 01:54 PM

In one word. No

How the heck did the glass wall cause controversy? I barely remember it being mentioned.

Also Michelle was hardly controversial in her suaditon or even in the house for that matter. Entertaining yes, but bar the table incident, nothing too outrageous. She would've been nothing without Emma and Stuart.
