More video games sold than DVD\'s in 2008
New research has revealed that worldwide revenues from the sale of boxed video games exceeded that of Blu-ray and DVD during 2008.
Video Business outlines a report compiled by Media Control GfK International which indicates that worldwide sales of packaged media closed at around $61 billion (£43.8 billion) in 2008. DVD and Blu-ray accounted for 47% of the figure but video games sales surpassed them to represent 53% of the total. Gaming software sales also climbed by 20% during the year to reach $32 billion, while DVD and Blu-ray fell by 6% to $29.8 billion. Nintendo's hugely successful Wii console was identified as a contributing factor to the trend, alongside the ongoing transition from DVD to Blu-ray. The analysis firm also believes that video games could rise again to account for 57% of all boxed product sales by the close of this year. Digital Spy cool:dazzler: |
