Thousands complain to the BBC - for dropping Carol Thatcher

THOUSANDS COMPLAIN TO BBC FOR DROPPING CAROL THATCHER IN RACE ROW

----------

The BBC has received more than 2,200 complaints over its decision to drop Carol Thatcher after she referred to a professional tennis player as a "golliwog".

The corporation said today it had so far logged 2,245 complaints against the decision to sack Thatcher, while it has received 60 calls and emails supporting its decision.

Thatcher, the daughter of former prime minister Lady Thatcher, was dropped as a roving reporter on BBC1's The One Show on Tuesday night after refusing to make a full public apology over the remark made in the show's backstage green room.

Her spokeswoman said it was an off-the-cuff remark made "in jest".

BBC1 controller Jay Hunt today strongly defended the corporation's decision, saying it had caused offence to several members of production staff.

Hunt said Thatcher had described the black tennis player as "golliwog" in front of 12 people, including The One Show presenter Adrian Chiles, guest Jo Brand and a senior charity worker from Comic Relief.

Chiles, Brand and other staff had been offended, said Hunt, and the next day an executive producer spoke to Thatcher about the remark, prompting an email apology from her in which she said the comment had been a joke.

"What she decides to say at home in private is one thing, but we have given Carol ample opportunity to give a fulsome apology and she has chosen not to do so. She maintains that her comment was made in jest," Hunt said in an interview with the BBC Radio 4 Today programme this morning.

"This is not her working in a private space and she was not in the pub with her friends. She was sitting in a BBC green room on BBC premises surrounded by a diverse production team on The One Show speaking to a BBC booked guest, a BBC booked celebrity and in the presence of a senior production worker from Comic Relief. In those circumstances she was effectively operating in a workplace."

Hunt added that Thatcher has not been banned or sacked by the BBC and is still working for the corporation.

"But The One show prides itself on the diversity of its production team and its range of coverage across the country, and I think everybody would be able to see that that is not an appropriate place for her to work now."

It's probably people who thought the BBC over reacted to the whole thing who are complaining.

What she said was disgraceful but a sacking did seem a bit hash when some kind official warning or even a final warning and suspension would have been more the sort of thing that should have happened. After it wasn't broadcast on air!

Spike 05-02-2009 04:12 PM

She shouldn't have been dropped
I can see why they would give her a warning but not why they would drop her
The BBC are just scared of the slightest bit of controversy these day after the whole Ross and Brand thing

You have to remember the Daily Mail got behind trying to ruin Ross and Brands careers with their anti-BBC attitude
This time they wont act in the same way to Thatcher because the BBC have acted so there is nothing to complain about. Also the Daily Mail can be seen as a racist newspaper if you look at their articles and readers comments so they will probably support Thatcher and not the BBC

The bbc have had alot of stick lately and any racial issue against them would even do more damage, maybe thats why they acted so quickly to show their zero tolerence with anything racist... By not sacking her many people would think the bbc supports her.

Callum 05-02-2009 04:26 PM

Good I'm going to make one now, she should not have been dropped. The eavesdropper who leaked it to the press though I think they should have been dropped. It totally invades peoples privacy.

The reply to the complaints from the BBC Website

Quote:

The One Show, BBC One, Carol Thatcher's off air remarks
Publication date: 5 February 2009
Complaint

We received complaints about The One Show's decision not to renew Carol Thatcher's contract with the programme following remarks she made in the Green Room off air.

The BBC's response

Carol Thatcher's remarks were not made in private but in a BBC Green Room in front of a number of people including BBC staff and caused great offence to those who heard them.

The One Show had hoped that Carol would issue an unconditional apology to those whom she had offended. Unlike other presenters who have found themselves at the centre of a news story in the past, Carol declined to do so.

As a result, her position on The One Show is no longer tenable and there are no plans to work with her in the future on that show. This is because her role as a roving reporter requires her to report on a wide variety of issues and to meet a diverse range of people throughout the country, many of whom are unlikely to agree that her remarks were acceptable even as a joke.

This does not mean she is banned from the BBC as a whole but simply she is no longer able to fulfil her current role on The One Show.

The BBC considers any language of a racist nature to be wholly unacceptable.

I can understand that but too do it in the way they have done it is problem. It doesn't look like they handle it properly at all it was a knee jerk reaction.

They must have some kind of disciplinary procedures, what are they and did they follow them? What happened?

Like I said before if they gave her some kind of final warning, which she deserved, and told her she had to make an unconditional apology, and she refused then it would be clear why she was sacked.

30stone 05-02-2009 04:44 PM

Lol couldnt see it happening !!!

ah well people do what they llike, id not complain about somthing unless it was a serious thing...

She shouldnt have said it but i dont think she should have been fired over it.

Tom 05-02-2009 05:14 PM

They wouldn't be able to win either way- if they hadn't dropped her straight away there would have been complaints anyway

yeh very interesting The Daily Mail not getting behind that one! And I notice AMA had to try and explain why it was racist yet again to people who still just dont get it! and dont ever bother to look beyond their own little worlds! "Well my mates down the pub agree so I must be right" Open your windows!

Red Moon 06-02-2009 09:18 PM

I have been looking at some of the press on this and they, the press, have really confused the issue in how they have reported the story. And the BBC haven't done themselves any favors in how they have handled things.

For example she wasn't sacked, they just refused to renew her contact, and she she did apologize but the BBC did accept it.

It's a lot more complicated story than she was sack from the one show for saying a certain g word.

lol hannah ...
Callum could use the little wheel on his mouse to go up read the article
"the black tennis player as "golliwog" in front of 12 people." .... 12 mate

Your argument doesn't cut it Callum because she wasn't in a bar with her mates etc but was "effectively operating in a workplace". It's against the law to racially vilify in the work place and those around are obligated to report it. Calling them "eavesdroppers" is equally monstrous and hilarious.... at home mate you can talk all the sh*t you want, at work...sorry champ you'll get the sack....so go play with your golliwog toys hehe ( joking)

She deserves to get kicked after "refusing to make a full public apology" ...instead she makes some weasley email that said it was a joke.
Infront of 12 people ...!!! wow....some of whom had to be black...she must be retarded. And even if no people in the room were black you don't need to be black to be offended by racism. Doesn't a "joke" or "in jest" imply she has mates.... lol she couldn't possibly. Were the black staff supposed to laugh at this great joke? And in what context is calling a black person a golliwog even in any way funny.

Nah she deserved what she got and it's funny that such a stuck up toff who talks like she has marbles in her mouth has so much support here on tibb.... hmmmm can anyone thing what single thing they may have in common?.... I can..

ps ... don't lock this one admin ...we'll be good:angel:

yeah that was funny hey Netto? A black person is trying to explain that he finds it offensive and the still they couldn't believe it. We don't have a great diversity of opinions on this forum ie people from many different cultures etc but now and the we get a chance to see the world through other peoples eyes for second. That's how I see AMA....obviously I don't define him as simply as just a black tibb member but on topics like this is good to have a different perspective.

That's because most people that complain are hypocrites. They'll complain about Ross swearing or making crude remarks but it mainly stems from the fact that Ross is paid so much and is a fairly liberal chap.

Same with Brand, he is very liberal so is attacked by papers such as The Daily Mail.

But if someone makes a racist remark and is fired or suspended, then the Daily Mail gets all up in arms and takes a "You can't say anything these days!" type of attitude, not realising their own hypocrisy.

they realise it... it's their readers that don't. The writers and editors know what sells papers...ie pandering to it's reader's fantasies . Readers don't want to be told they're bigoted... they want their retarded ideas reinforced... and are happy to pay the price of a "newspaper" for it. So in that respect these writes and editors have more things in common with sex workers than with journalist...both take money to gratify a base need.

 ... in oz someone as stuck up as that would get booed off any panel show but in the UK for some reason (mahaha) a vocal minority are coming to her defence. Next they'll get the violins out for this "poor" inbred who's public school education didn't even teach her some common sense.

In oz "upper class" is a pejorative term, ie self important people known more for their snivelling smarmy obsequiousness and general befuddlement( omg! Boris Johnson, what a write off). While over there you guys hold them in such high esteem. .... lol they even have a veto over your democracy via the house of lords.

I am not wishing this.

But if Carole was killed
then the BBC worker that leaked the Golly story to the Press
is at fault.

30stone 08-02-2009 12:35 PM

Don't think it would happen people get death threats in big brother now a days.. lol.

But yeh if things were to happen it would be mainly the person that leaked its fault as it wouldnt have gone further than the studio.

No its not, its still her fault. If she doesn't want stuff like this to happen then she shouldn't say things that are gonna annoy people!
