This is the film that launched the career of Kate Winslet, who within three years of appearing in this fact-based New Zealand drama was starring in Titanic. It also transformed the fortunes of director Peter Jackson, who went from making ingenious schlock horrors such as Bad Taste and Braindead to directing the Lord of the Rings trilogy. The real star of this masterly mix of nostalgia, innocence and menace, however, is Melanie Lynskey, who is mesmerising as the matricidal half of the teenage duo who scandalised a nation in the early 1950s. Although Winslet and Lynskey dominate the film, they are splendidly supported by Diana Kent and Clive Merrison as Winslet's parents, and by Sarah Peirse as Lynskey's ill-fated mother.

I watched it from the begining and its sooo good! Anyone who hasn't seen it has too!! Kate is BRILLIANT IN IT!!! :love:

Is she a lesbian then?

It's about teenage lesbian lovers that cannot be together.. it is seen as a disease, the film is set in the 1940's/1950's... Then they were spilt. Both girls have lost their marbles!!

I've been kinda watching it's been on mute though.

Now comes the bad part.. they kill one of the mothers so they can be together! :sad:

I hated the part when shed taken her daughter to the doctor and the doctor said she has homosexuallity! Her mum went crazy and asked if there is a cure..
