Animated comedy The Simpsons is to become the longest-running prime-time series in US TV history after makers Fox ordered another two seasons.

The show is currently in its 20th season which matches the record of Western drama Gunsmoke, shown on CBS, which ended in 1975.

The 21st season will begin in the autumn with the 22nd airing next year.

The Simpsons was first shown in December 1989, and made its UK debut on Sky in September 1990.

The new commission of 44 episodes over two seasons will bring the total number of shows to 493.

The popular cartoon, featuring Bart, Homer, Marge and other residents of Springfield, has received 24 Emmy awards in its 20 years on screen.

Next month, a new episode of The Simpsons is to have its premiere in the UK for the first time in the show's history.

New episodes are usually shown in the US on Fox a week before being shown on Sky1 in the UK.

In The Name Of The Grandfather, a St Patrick's Day special which details a family holiday to Ireland, will be shown on Sky1 on 17 March.

I dont think the Simpsons will ever get old. As long as they change the writers about now and again I think they should keep it!

Simpsons is still quality there is always shows they can take the piss out of.

Simpsons already dead IMO

The thing about The Simpsons is that most of it's plots are based on current events, so as long as there are things going on in the world, I think it'll keep running.

The thing that makes the difference is the ability to adapt every situations and events which make them part of our family, if I can say so.

When I discovered Family Guy - The Simpsons became dead to me. And the awful movie was the final nail in the coffin. However, the past few months it seems to be rising again and I've found myself enjoying it more.

Simpsons was one of the first programmes i became obssesed with i love it...although i wish they would show more new ones on C4.

Looking foward to the Paddy's Day episode,although Ireland will probably just be really green and full of drunk leprachauns,lol!

Its still going strong, after 20 years the show in the US is still getting 8-10m viewers with 13m tuning into an episode a few months ago. Good concidering about 15 years ago it was getting around 15-18m.

then of course it looks dead.
