Daily Mirror urges Britain: Get behind our Dancing on Ice queen Coleen Nolan
She's the fearless 40-something mum-of-three who is freezing out her younger opposition.

And today we are urging Britain to get behind our Dancing on Ice queen Coleen Nolan.

The Mirror columnist has been winning the hearts of the nation with daring routines, wit, humour and smile.

Despite low marks from the mean judges, the public have helped her escape the dreaded skate-off.

Coleen might not be the best skater, but she has put her more youthful rivals in the shade overcoming crippling nerves to stay in the contest and show a mature, curvy woman can hold her own.

Loose Women presenter Coleen, 43, has been cheered on by her devoted family - including hubby Ray and daughter Ciara.

They're just as proud of their battling girl as we are here at the Mirror. Together we can get her to the final. C'mon Coleen! You can do it!

Well looks like it worked.... she is rubbish.

Ross 01-03-2009 11:41 PM

Yeah. Next week Donal is going. Coleen final 4!

Yep.... and it shows what rubbish judges the UK public is of ice dance.

Lauren 01-03-2009 11:51 PM

Aw, I like her.
She's good.

And also, it doesn't show "what rubbish judges the UK public is of ice dance". It's fair to say the show was never meant for serious ice dancing enthusiasts. It never has been. Just like BB isn't a programme for us all to watch as a social experiment. It's always about who appeals to us, who makes themselves endearing to the viewer, who has a journey etc.

She is Rubbish

Come on, Todd was endearing. He was funny. Coleen however is ex-band member of rubbish band from the year dot who now appears on self indulgent daytime TV show. She is not even funny.

But her ice dancing is a joke.

And what do we all complain about the, the wrong housemates going.... I rest my case.

Ross 02-03-2009 12:00 AM

Coleen is not 'rubbish' I think that's a harsh thing to say.

She has clearly shown she has progressed in her skating. Which is what it's about. She can dance on ice. She's not the best and she will go soon, she will not win. If the public want to keep her in, then so be it afterall we are the ones watching and voting...

Yet we all keep watching it, and have done.

The only complaints I've ever heard is that the HMs get too wacky and stupid, henceforth are not endearing. That's why the winner is always someone appealing to the viewer... Cameron BB4, for example.

DOI has never been about... dancing on ice. Obviously it's a major part, but the endearment to the viewer is a bigger part. If a contestant is disliked they'll be removed, regardless of their "dancing"

Sorry she is rubbish.

The public have been keeping her in because it's become a popularity contest. The way the public vote shows how shallow they are that can't get the basic concept of a talent show.

I think it's patronising to say the viewers can't GET the basic concept... I'm pretty sure they understand it.

Of course it's a popularity contest, if it wasn't it wouldn't be on TV, it'd just be a dancing on ice competition. But it's a television programme, which immediately means viewers pick favourites, and since its all done impersonally (i.e. through a television) they pick those they "like" over talent. It's happened throughout time with TV programmes like this.

You're probably right I am being patronising but it is the truth. And sometime the truth hurts.

It's not a popularity contest, it a dancing on ice competition. That is why it is called " Dancing on Ice' and not "Vote for the most popular failed Celebrity on Ice". It's a talent show. It is billed as a talent show. But the British public just don't understand.

Or don't care. 90%+ of the viewers watching DOI have probably never cared about dancing, nor ice figure skating before the programme, so why would they suddenly pick up an interest and expertise because of the show.

The show thrives on these "misunderstanding" viewers.

This is the 4th series you would have you think they would have got the basic concept of a ice dancing talent show and what they are meant to vote for.

This is like some of the odd voting on Strictly Come Dancing and the X-Factor, where the TV audience turn the whole format upside down by keeping the talentless ones in the show rather than the ones deserve to be in the show.

This week I really feel sorry for Roxanne who was far more talented than Coleen and had been improving week on week. Last week it was Melinda that went, again Coleen should have gone. Who is it going to be next gets the chop while Coleen survives again?

I can just see the smug face of the writer at the Mirror this morning thinking their story did it's bit. Personally I feel it is fools that write stories like this that are killing the format.

Just need Out Of Shape

I agree once she is in the skate off she is going to go, but what does it take to get her there?

It's obvious they GET it, they just don't care about it.

It's not hard to understand it's a talent show, and you're meant to vote for the one that's best at the given talent - give the British Public SOME credit. The fact is, they don't care. This programme is on TV and relies on votes - it's going to be a popularity context whatever the "speciality".

I have never given the ITV audience much credit. Most of the stuff the channel shows is mindless rubbish for the masses. Shame the same viewers ruin what is a wonderful talent show.

To be honest, if they don't care about figure skating and have no interest and expertise even at a basic level they shouldn't be allowed to vote.

Then the show would have a very small viewing audience, not enough to keep them on TV. Like I said earlier, the show thrives on the "mindless" audience, as does most shows on TV.

If people want a figure skating tournament, then they should go and see one. Watching a reality TV show in the hope of it being taken seriously is a pointless task.

Problem is the if the show isn't taken seriously to some extent the the show itself becomes pointless and it will lose audience.

After all keeping in the rubbish skaters in, especially if they are not entertaining in any way, doesn't make for good entertainment.

robb 02-03-2009 12:24 PM

Must admit I am suprised by the support for Coleen, yet the much more entertaining Todd Carty was given short shrift. Have the viewers got behind Coleen because she is the only rubbish one left? Probably. Coleen's remarks, too, are quite funny ('thanks for sending me on straight after Ray Quinn')
As with Strictly, though,it's hardly a level playing field, is it. Quinn, Zoe, and Jessica have all skated before. Quinn skated on TV for XF!!
hardly suprising therefore, that all viewers don't take it 'seriously'.
NOTE THE KIDS IN THE T&D SEARCH FOR A STAR, BTW? THEY ARE PROPER SKATERS. NOT QUINN.
