Hamilton receives MBE from Queen

Lewis Hamilton was awarded an MBE by the Queen on Tuesday for his achievement in becoming the youngest Formula One champion in history.

Britain's Hamilton, 24, who donned a grey pinstripe suit for his visit to Buckingham Palace, said of the Queen: "I was so nervous to meet her. It was one of the most overwhelming experiences I've ever had. I'm kind of lost for words.

"I don't think you realise until you're standing in front of her how special it is."

He said the monarch revealed she had watched the crunch race in Brazil in November which saw Hamilton pip local hero Felipe Massa of Ferrari to the title in a thrilling finish to the season.

"The Queen said she watched very closely the last few laps. She was asking about the car," he said.

Hamilton is currently preparing with his McLaren team for the season-opening Australian Grand Prix on March 29 and said he expected the queen would be keeping tabs on his progress.

"The pressure's on now. She'll be watching as I go into the first race," he said.

The MBE, (Member of the Order of the British Empire) is now the lowest-tier award in the honours system.
