Hanging death \'such a waste of a young life\'

A teenager died when he accidentally hanged himself in a cry for help that went tragically wrong.
Billy Callcut, who was 19, was found dead at the flat he shared with his girlfriend Lacey Hider.

An inquest at Portsmouth Guildhall heard that their relationship was on the rocks and she had threatened to leave him because of his occasional recreational use of cocaine.

Ms Hider left the flat in New Road, Buckland, Portsmouth at 8.30pm in the evening of June 18 last year and was due to return shortly after.

She came back an hour later to find her boyfriend hanged in the bedroom.

The inquest was told that Mr Callcut's mother had bought him a car earlier in the day and he had been in good spirits.

Christina Byng told the hearing her son's death had been a huge shock.

She said: 'Never in a million years did we think he would do something like this.

'I bought him a car that day and he was as happy as anything.

'When we gave him the car he was jumping about all excited and we had agreed to go for a meal on the Saturday.

'There was no sense of anything being wrong with him, he had a good job with a good wage coming in.

'He was always the joker in the pack – he would do something and think about it afterwards.'

The inquest was told that a post-mortem examination found no trace of alcohol or drugs and that no note was left at the scene.

Police Sergeant Paul Baker from Fratton police station said: 'It was an unusual death with no warning or preamble – almost like he had a funny five minutes.'

Recording a verdict of accidental death, Portsmouth coroner David Horsley said he didn't believe Mr Callcut intended to kill himself but had possibly passed out while trying to make a point to his girlfriend.

'I think what's happened is it was some sort of gesture,' he said.

'He thought his girlfriend was coming back to find him.

'Whether he wanted to shock or make a point I don't know but I don't think he meant to kill himself. It's such a waste of a young life.'

It's really sad when that happens. An acquantance of mine did it at only 15 years old. He was incredibly nice, talented and so much more to give. RIP.

Does the Darwin award have an EMO (cry for help) category?
