George Galloway's fury over Canada ban

Anti-war MP George Galloway has vowed to fight a decision to ban him from Canada on the grounds of national security.

Galloway, who represents the Respect party, has been refused permission to enter Canada under rules designed to thwart those who carry out, fund or support terrorism.

He pledged to fight the ban, adding: "It is irrational, inexplicable and an affront to Canada's good name."

But a spokesman for the country's immigration minister said the decision by border security officials would not be overturned by the government.

The spokesman added: "We're going to uphold the law, not give special treatment to this street-corner Cromwell who brags about giving financial support to Hamas, a terrorist organisation banned in Canada."

Galloway, MP for Bethnal Green, was due to attend a series of rallies protesting about the conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan.

He is considering legal action in an effort to overturn the ban.
