Sir Michael Parkinson has launched a tirade against Jade Goody.

The veteran broadcaster told the latest issue of Radio Times that the late reality TV star represented "all that is paltry and wretched about Britain."

He said: "Jade Goody has her own place in the history of television and, while it's significant, it's nothing to be proud of. Her death is as sad as the death of any young person, but it's not the passing of a martyr or a saint or, God help us, Princess Di.

"When we clear the media smoke screen from around her death, what we're left with is a woman who came to represent all that's paltry and wretched about Britain today.

"She was brought up on a sink estate, as a child came to know drugs and crime, was barely educated, ignorant and puerile. Then she was projected to celebrity by Big Brother and became a media chattel to be exploited til the day she died."

His comments come just days after Jade Goody was laid to rest following a funeral that drew comparisons with that of Princess Diana. Thousands of mourners lined the streets and threw flowers as the hearse made its way to the service in Buckhurst on Saturday.

agree and Oz has more than it's fair share but what's interesting is why some Brits put her on a pedistal and make her out to be a martyr.

I think he's comments were taken out of context, it sounds like he was slamming the media coverage and the sadness of her early life, he says her death was as tragic as any young person passing. Read between the lines people.

If you were to listen to everything he said he probably didn't slam Jade much at all it's just the article has been written in such a way that creates a story. But we'll never know that sicne we only got the snippets which paints him as the antagonist of the story.

Ahem Parkinson your 100% correct

Shaun 07-04-2009 01:40 PM

He's slamming British celebrity culture more than her, per se.

Most people are nation proud, Americans come first in that! But i think most people are like that but fail to see the real truth with how Britain became a rich empire, the cost still with us today, but nearly every nation has its dark history... Better to know about it than sweep it under the carpet.

Hold up the mirror to any nation and the ugly truth will always look back at them.

I don't think he's slamming Goody, he's moreso slamming the celeb-culture we hold in Britain.

One thing I don't like, is his pompous nature though. The way he starts his rant as "She was brought up on a sink estate, as a child came to know drugs and crime, was barely educated" - this is hardly a negative portrayal of someone, it's unfortunate for her - but this in itself doesn't make her a bad person.

he received an honorary doctorate from the University of Lincolnshire and Humberside. He was invested as a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) by Prince Charles in November 2000 for services to broadcasting. Parkinson was made a Knight Bachelor in the 2008 New Year's Honours List; he remarked that he was "not the type to get a knighthood" coming as he did "from Barnsley. They give it to anyone nowadays."

Parkinson was ranked 8th in a list of the 100 Greatest British Television Programmes drawn up by the British Film Institute in 2000, voted for by industry professionals. In April 2006, Parkinson was awarded Honorary Patronage of the University Philosophical Society (Trinity College, Dublin). He was voted number 20 in ITV's "TV's 50 Greatest Stars".

On 4 June, 2008 his knighthood was bestowed by the Queen at Buckingham Palace

Since 2005, Parkinson has served as the President of the Sports Journalists' Association of Great Britain, the largest national organisation of sports journalists in the world.

Parkinson became the first Chancellor of Nottingham Trent University on 11 November, 2008. His role includes representing the university and conferring degrees at graduation ceremonies. He is quoted as saying, “I am honoured to be offered the chancellorship at Nottingham Trent University. In television I have always worked with young, ambitious people and I am keen to be involved in this university which helps to realise the aspirations of the young. It will also give me an opportunity to see what I missed!”

Many people die of cancer and their names aren't all over the papers.
And I certainly don't think she should be compared to Princess Diana!!!!
