Parkinson slams Big Brother and the Apprentice

Sir Michael Parkinson has described Big Brother as "the modern version of Bedlam".

The 74-year-old TV star also criticised Sir Alan Sugar's The Apprentice, complaining about the show's negative format.

"I object to the exploitation of the underclass in shows like Big Brother," he told The Observer. "It is the modern version of Bedlam, where you pay to see the poor benighted people making asses of themselves."

Speaking about The Apprentice, he added: "Why do people find [the show] appealing? When Sir Alan says 'You're fired', that is not a nice thing to happen.

"The basic premise is not worthwhile, or enthralling."

Last week, Parkinson called for "conversational chatshows" to be brought back to TV.

I liked this guy but the last couple of months all he's done is moan.

funny how he didn't have the balls to say it when he had his own chat show???

I wish he`d piss off the silly old twat

Stu 19-05-2009 02:08 PM

Are my missing something here? What he said was absoloutely right. We DO watch people make arses of themselves. That is the idea.

Iceman 19-05-2009 02:11 PM

I wasn't saying what he said was wrong just that all he's doing is moaning now and it just seems stupid how he didn't do it when he was on TV every weekend but will now. Know what I mean?

Spike 19-05-2009 02:15 PM

All he seems to do lately is complain about TV shows
I really don't like him

True, he does moan quiet a bit, but whatever, he has earned it. My comment was more aimed towards naive people telling seventy plus year old television legends to piss off.

Yes he Hates Big Brother
but he has no show anymore
so all he can do is moan.

Im sure Michael Parkinson would have absoloutely no problem getting a show if he so wished. That really is not the point.

Well your comment was pretty thick ignorant, but I went with the far nicer assumption that you are 'naive'.

No, the comment was. Not you. Thats my opinion. Shame on me for considering slagging off a seventy plus year old television legend with little else to say but language to be ignorant.

Whats him being seventy plus got to do with anything, and he might be a 'legend' to you and others but he`s not to me.

Why does he feel the need to keep popping up from nowhere with these random little rants,he comes across as such a snob, infact he comes across as bitter in some comments I have read, not this one.

Like its been said, why diddn`t he have the balls to say what he really thought when he was actually on tv?

Parkinson has always been outspoken. You obviously dont like him, and thats fine, but hence you never watched much of his material, hence you would not know. Your only making the assumption that he has suddenly become very outspoken based on the fact that he spoke out on one or two of your favourite things this year.

If I worked my ass off in television to make it big for decades and suddenly saw people with absoloutely zero talent from the middle of suburban whatsitcalled in England become more famous than me with the young generation, I would be a little bit outspoken about it too.
