I hope I\'m not racist...

Am I racist? I don't understand half of the housemates. It's really hard to understand the majority of them.

yoshi8 06-06-2009 02:43 PM

That means you are racist as you will not bend your ear to understand a different accent.

Sorry to say it.

Sam! 06-06-2009 02:43 PM

Your not racist for not being understand them no.

Annie 06-06-2009 02:43 PM

I cant either so if your racist then so am I.

Tom4784 06-06-2009 02:44 PM

Nah I wouldn't say so, It's just a case that you haven't got a good ear for accents I think.

What a load of shitt!

Rachelll 06-06-2009 02:44 PM

I do try... I just find it hard to make out what they're saying.

\PJ/ 06-06-2009 02:44 PM

Alot of people are saying this,i can understand them fine.

Novo 06-06-2009 02:44 PM

Hardly difficult to understand are they

They all can speak english

Tom 06-06-2009 02:44 PM

I can't atm either (well some of, can still make out what they're saying but not word for word) but we'll get used to it. I suppose we can apply the BB8 twins here, on day 1 they looked identical and couldn't tell them apart by about week 5. By the end they looked nothing like each other. See where I'm going with that?

And I don't mean this in a racist way or anything but this years series is like an ethnic minorities club.

bronaaaa 06-06-2009 02:45 PM

I don't think it makes you rascit, some are difficult to understand but in time you will get used to the accents - my french teachers french and at the start of the year she may as well have been speaking french her accent was that strong but it's fine now

Marc 06-06-2009 02:45 PM

Your not racist at all. Its not your fault that you haven't travelled the world and got to understand different languages and accents... don't worry. If anyone says you are a racist they are just melodramatics and are ignorant (even though they may think the same about us) to the fact that not everyone can understand other dialects and accents. Give it some time though and you'll be understand more clearer.

InsertNameHere 06-06-2009 02:45 PM

what a stupid bloody thread, youre only racist if you hate the ppl for their skin color, country, accent.

Totally! Diversity in races etc has went too far. If you look at the ratio's of Britain, its nothing like that at all.

Me too, I think it just shows that racism can come in many forms. One is just not being bothered to listen to someone because their accent is different to yours.

I can't understand strong Liverpool/Geordie/Scottish accents that well. Am I racist to those?

\PJ/ 06-06-2009 02:48 PM

I do agree with Tom on his last comment.

Sorry, but not being able to understand someone is hardly rasist. :puzzled:
Some people can take strong accents others can't.

30stone 06-06-2009 02:49 PM

This is from not understanding someone, if you disliked them because you couldnt understand them or somthing it would be different, but if it is as simple as not understanding someones accent, of course your not, don't worry.

As for yoshi8, that was uncalled for, how do you know he isn't? Its early days and given some housemates are hard to understand.

I would say a definite strong prejudice at least.

What??

I am assuming that was a joke.

Just because you have difficulty understanding someone doesn't mean you are racist.

Racist would be insulting, discriminating or other negative act against someone based on their ethnicity.

Exactly.
I have a Liverpudlian accent, but a very weak one. My friends have strong ones and when I first met a few I had to listen very carefully to make out what they were saying, but I can totally understand them now.

I'm half Scottish- do I have prejudice against myself?
