Enid 09-06-2009 09:38 PM

Hahah I know. That was a bit odd. I'm sure the German language existed way before WWII.

President 09-06-2009 09:40 PM

lol such a stupid thing to say

sol 09-06-2009 09:44 PM

Haha yeah that made me lol. I suppose at least she understands the similarity which is more than some people know.

Miss-red 09-06-2009 09:54 PM

haha yeah does anybody know what language german and english people spoke before world world two lol unbelievable karly xx

Scorge 09-06-2009 10:10 PM

I was listening to her like 'ooo she's intellegent' then that German English thing just left me speechless. In WW1 and WW2 Germans never set foot on British soil there was no invasion and the German and British language was made many hundreds of years ago. Silly her.

She means well though.

mustgetalife 09-06-2009 10:14 PM

It was very good to get a linguistic lesson from Karly, always best not to discuss subjects unless you really know what you're on about, but that wont stop her or the rest of them!
The phrase a little knowledge is a dangerous thing comes to mind, mine not hers lol:blush2:

Sorry Scorge but thats not entirely true, the Nazi's did land and hold British soil, it was Guernsey or Jersey, the small islands just to the west of France. I think 11 jewish people from the island died in camps. That is me just being very picky though.

The whole sentance scared me though, Hitler was one of the worst things to come out of the 20th Century. and for someone just out of school this is an alarming thing to not know about (especially as we havent been successfully invaded since 1066).

I just shouted at my TV a history lesson when she said that.

Having said that, I am praying that she just got a bit confused and meant Italian, as Italian and English have come from Latin because of the invading Romans. So, just 2000 years out and wrong country.....

Still not good though.

What a silly girl:spin2:

Makes sense coming from carly.

gizthewiz 10-06-2009 09:49 AM

I'm her history teacher and she is perfectly correct,

Rudolf Hess (Hitler's Deputy) landed solo in Scotland in May 1941, he then single handedly taught the Scots the rudiments of the German language, before that the Scots only communicated by two words "Och" & "Aye". Then thousands of Scots came down to England and tried to teach German to the English (which incidentally embarrassed the Royal Family who were German and were trying to keep it quiet) but the English weren't too bright they only had two words at that time "*****" & "Off" and they cobbled & muddled together the two languages to speak the English we speak today.

Karly speaks the truth innit

Not quite..and almost as bad as saying the nazis in England during WW2, but i get what you mean by the Latin influence in parts.

Here is a brief history of the English language:

After the Romans left, England was invaded by the Germanic tribes of Saxons and Angles, hence the term Anglo-Saxon to describe white English folk.
The Brits were pushed out to Wales and Cornwall and is why there is a similarity in their languages. And why the Cornish want to be independant. (Well about 20-30 of them).

Now although the Saxons were the dominant tribe, The whole area became known as Angle-Land, which inturn was basterdised to England. The Angles were predominant in the east of the country in a place now known as Anglia.

The germanic language mixed with the resident brit language Brythonic, a Celtic language. There is also some Norse influence via the Vikings, especially in the Northeast. The other big influence was of course the French from 1066 onwards. For example..words like INFLUENCE are derived from the French word.... influence....get it.
Pre- 1066 is known as Olde English. Post- 1066 is known as Middle English and was what the Canterbury Tales was written in by Geoffrey Chaucer. This lasted till 1470, when the Chancery Standard, a form of London-based English, began to be used. This was aided by the introduction of the printing press into England by William Caxton in the 1470s. The language of England as spoken after this time, up to 1650, is known as Early Modern English.

There endeth the lesson.

Beastie 10-06-2009 12:22 PM

well she knows more than me! lol

Wildcat! 10-06-2009 12:33 PM

It was funny! But she meant well!

German and English are similar (lost of similar words) Both germanic languages. BUt hilarious how she thought it was because of WW2, and that germans landed in the UK in the 1st place! Seems she thought the English language was invented during WW2:hugesmile:

Prole 10-06-2009 12:35 PM

She said that the structure of German and English was the same. But in German, their verbs at the end of their sentences are putting.

Hi everyone - first post on this forum :-)

SHe was technically right! The only funny thing was, how she thought the reason was because of WW2 and how Germany invaded England!
