The Perils of Being a Toff
 

Early on I nearly - nearly - posted a comment about Freddie, where I called him "Boris Johnson's stupider little brother". Then I deleted it, thinking I'd wait a while and see if first impressions were misleading. I'm glad I did, because things have changed quite a bit since then. That doesn't mean I no longer find him annoying. He's as annoying as he ever was. Part of the problem is something he isn't really responsible for. He just happened to be born into the privileged classes, and can't help revealing that every time he opens his mouth. Unfortunately he's also embraced peace and love, and there's no combination worse than that. A hippified toff is just about at the limits of toleration. I met one once who was startlingly similar in both looks and mannerisms to Freddie. I think his name was Nick. There was a three-way conversation at the bar of a pub, about what songs we liked. Nick said, "I like that one that goes, you know..."dum dum the equestrian statue/ marching up and down the square/ di didi di didi di didi...." Except he pronounced it "squah". He went through an entire verse of this dismal *****ing novelty song (by Jonathan King, I think it was), bobbing his body backwards and forwards and making conducting gestures with his arms. I was smiling at him encouragingly, thinking "I'd really quite like to shove a grand piano up your arse". The only thing that stopped me at least kicking him in the gonads was the fact that I was six foot tall, and he was about four feet ten. It would have got me a bad name.

The difference with Freddie is that I can now see a bit of steel underneath. He's taken some stick from the other HMs, who seem to have chosen him by unspoken agreement as the automatic choice for nomination. Siavash was probably right when he suggested a lot of them were people who just wanted their noms to pass unnoticed. When a dozen senators are brandishing knives, no one remembers who delivered the fatal thrust that killed Caesar. Nomming Freddie is a good way of just merging with the crowd. But Freddie has stood up very well. When his name's called out, he's downcast, as you'd expect, but he hasn't retreated into self-pity or tried to keep his head down in the hope that they'll pass him over next time. He's always up for a spat with Sree or anyone else if he thinks something needs to be said. So my regard for him is increasing by the day. Whether he can maintain his positive outlook, I don't know. It could be that the strain will wear him down in the end, and he'll turn paranoid. But right now he' s riding high in the polls, and deserves to be. He's got my vote anyway.

aww ketman! that was nice to read :D and yes whatever happens freddie always stands up for himself! and is true to himself! i think he will get down if things carry on the way they are!! like 11 more weeks with no friends for him will be a cause of very tough times :( well i know siavash and marcus are being more friendly to freddie! but i mean he has survived 3 evicitions after all! im afriad new housemates are the only easy way out!! i think freddie is a strong character and will still remain mostly possitive! but he deserves a friend, a companion to go in there!

Lovely read Ketman. Freddie is well worth backing. If he was just some stuckup toff with no soul i wouln't waste my time. But, he has wonderful personality, he thinks of others, ie sacrificing biscuits for garlic so that everyone can benefit.

He has been raised well, and so what if he is into all this peace and love malarki, better than being down and miserable and feeling sorry for yourself.

His bright outlook is inspiring even though he must feel like sh*t in that house. He won't change his ways with the way he eats, talks, laughs, sings and why should he! The main thing he is happy with himself and that's all that matters.

freddie is an amazing character!! its the housemates complete and utter loss that they dont like freddie!

I should've added that the Freddie situation is one of the few sources of real entertainment in this rather dull series. The way the public is playing ping-pong with the HMs, with Freddie as the ball. The HMs bat him out, the public bats him back. Thock...thock...thock.... Great stuff.

I agree with you. My daughter has just left school with not good grades due to constant intimidation and harrassment from certain schoolkids, but unlike Freddie is unable to let it wash over her and it's made her life a misery affecting her learning ability.

Freddie is all for peace and love but when confined in that house with those moronic idiots it's going to get extremely hard to ignore even for him if they keep this up.

Well said... I agree with every word.He has shown an enormous strength of charachter.

My daughter was persecuted at school because she was clever. She is now 33 and has just stopped having nightmares. So I have every sympathy for your daughter

Freddie said he had undiagnosed dyslexia until he was 13 and then had to have his brain 'reorganised'.
I imagine he was persecuted at school and called stupid on a daily basis.

You get the parents you are born to and it is not your fault if they are rich or poor.

Freddie is kind and gentle and easily hurt but he tries to cover up.

I would rather talk to him any day than that Kris. His attitude to women stinks.

Nice one Ketman. Pretty much sums up how I felt about him initially too.

We have to say that as far as Freddie is concerned, his "love and peace thing" is genuine. They have treated him abysmally but he hasn't let it corrupt his moral sense or dignity.
He "talks the talk" but more impressively, he "walks the walk" as they say.
Keep it up Freddie Boy, I feel his star is still rising in there! :elephant:

ah!!!! Finally stimulating conversation with depth! I really admire him for all that is said above. For me personally, If I was him I wouldnt have been able to cope and keep my cool! I admire that so much about him. Also, I love that he diplomatically tries to stand up for Angel (prank) , Noirin (specs) and etc... eventhough it might get him in trouble and nominating again! I love it ! I love it that he doesnt shout but tries to listen to all sides and reasonably proves his point.

I really hope they dont break his soul, with childish pranks, unjustified bad mouthing him behind his back, with being up for nominations week after week.

Most of all, if I was a fellow housemate, or even on the outside, out of all the hms in there, i would consider him a good friend. I know he will stand by me if anyone has done me wrong.
