They did go to check on the children, but i think it was not enough. They should have been there at the apartment or took the children with them at the restaurant. And kept the windows closed.

Something to suggest she was taken. Fingerprints maybe? I know the evidence has been tampered with since the beginning, so we may never know for sure what happened that night. They made such a mess...
