I think our modern way of letting children dress up and go door to door has evolved from children going to ask for a gift (as a sacrifice) to warn off evil spirits on this night.
Now it is seen as a kind of fun festival and you know what? we have little enough to celebrate in this country and I think if kids love to get dressed up, go out with appropriate supervision and have a wail of a time I see no problem with it. Why cant our kids have a little fun with an edge of something scarey to it. I used to have halloween parties for my kids every year and they enjoyed every minute of it (not as much as I did).
