To me, the characters are Donna and Gaz, their friend Tim from the pub, his sister Cassie, and Gaz's former carer Billy. Series 9 was the first I watched, and I loved it. When it looped back round to the beginning I was waiting for the "real" characters to come back
Now I see the original cast (+Munch) is the best, but I also maintain that S9 is as good as all the pre-Johnny death episodes.

Oh, I dunno. The "current" references, sure, but people like that still exist, and there's not any instances I can think of which would be averted/cancelled out by them having social media, they all had mobiles from the beginning.
