Labour MP charged with perverting the course of justice
A Labour MP faces trial after appearing in court accused of lying to police over a speeding offence.
Fiona Onasanya, who was elected MP for Peterborough with a majority of just 607 votes last June, appeared at Westminster Magistrates Court on July 12th charged with perverting the course of justice.
Court documents name Onasanya, 34, and her younger brother Festus, as having allegedly “falsely named” another person as having been the driver of a car driving over the speed limit in 2017, shortly after being elected.
The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) today said Ms Onasanya faced two counts of perverting the course of justice.
On the first count, she is alleged to have exceeded the speed limit and falsely informed the police that it was another driver.
On the second, her brother was alleged to have exceeded the speed limit and falsely named another person.
Ms Onasanya’s brother, Festus, is a singer who appeared on BBC 1 TV show Pitch Battle, hosted by Gareth Malone.
Ms Onasanya, who was a solicitor before her election to Parliament, is a Labour whip, meaning she is responsible for party discipline.
A Labour Party spokesperson said: "It would not be appropriate to comment on an ongoing case."
She won the Peterborough seat with a majority of just 607 votes, ousting Tory Stewart Jackson.
