Don't call them spanish. You won't be thanked for it. Barcelona is the capital of Catalonia and they see themselves as Catalonian, not Spanish. A bit like saying a Welsh person is from England.

They are from catalonia I know but the culture is spanish that's a fact. They have nothing against calling them spanish trust me. That's not an independent country, it'sl ike the States in the USA.

Wales has about the same independence as Catalonia, and I'd be horrified if someone said I was English.
The culture is similar in many ways between England and Wales but they're still unique. The same applies for Catalonia and Spain.
