12.30pm: Channel 4’s Big Brother has been criticised by media regulator Ofcom for its handling of an infamous punch up during the last series.
Ofcom has decided to uphold a series of complaints from 328 viewers relating to a fight which took place when two contestants were returned to the sealed Big Brother house after a period watching their former housemates from the side-lines.
Security guards were forced to intervene when violence broke out between some of the housemates, prompting high-profile headlines in the press and another wave of criticism over the quality of the show.
In a lengthy ruling published today, Ofcom said it agreed with Channel 4 that the housemates had not been unfairly treated by the producers that concocted the plan leading to the confrontation.
However, Ofcom believed that the length of time it took for intervention by security guards, once the violence broke out in the house, could have had an impact on viewers.
Additionally, an on-screen service that relayed live text messages from viewers also compounded the problem, Ofcom said
