this exactly how i also thought about it, and she does seem such a sweetie and very likeable, the sob story could only hurt her chances at doing well with the public i think
Katie should let her dancing do the talking, especially since she is a fan of the show, she should show that a lot on it takes two and social media let the people know how you're doing at rehearsals, same how Susan Calman handled that last year, the strictly fans like this from one of their own superfans
