I remember us poor kids building a small square in the field out of old house bricks and lighting a fire in it then putting an old pan on the top with bits of old lead piping in it.
We used old tin cans - peas, beans etc - upturned and filled the shallow rimmed bottom with clay from the field then cut out shapes from it -- Stars were the favourite -- then once the lead had melted we would pour it into the makeshift moulds and let it set and cool.
They were bright as silver but bloody useless really but we all wanted one anyway.
