Intelligence doesn't have to equate to boring. Intelligent TV is TV that has an understanding of what it is and why it is that way.

For example, Strictly is an intelligently produced show. It is fun, light-hearted, family-focused and entertaining. It is a show that understands what it is.

When you look at a show like X Factor - and Big Brother now, too - it lacks any self-awareness. It has become a parody of itself and completely lacks intelligence. It tries to be something it isn't, and constantly falls somewhere between lightness and importance.

For Big Brother to feel more intelligent in this sense, it has to be more stripped back and stronger in it's own, original format and benefit from it's uniqueness. It has to stop trying to be a Love Island or just another reality show. It has to be Big Brother again.
