To be honest, I think you have to enjoy the general western story / atmosphere to get a lot out of the first game. GTA5 for example is a fun / competent open world playground game to mess around in just for the action even if you totally ignore the characters and storyline, but RDR is one that you have to get immersed in for it to be worth it. I really enjoyed it but, quite tellingly I guess, I only played through RDR once whereas I've played through every GTA game since Vice city at least 3 times. San Andreas about 7 times
