You cant compare that to Ashley and Faye as they did not learn a new skill, just honed one they had already

Right but James has also been a trained dancer for 27 years (key word trained) which not only means that he has some of the technincal dancing aspect nailed down but he also has the mindset and routine of a dancer so he will find it much easier and it'll come much more naturally to put in many more hours of training than the others because he's used to it. And that's not something you can get used to in a couple of months, that's his experience.
And that's why their skating isn't on par, people don't pick things up at similar speeds and him having the advantages mentioned makes him much more likely to succeed.
