It sure was. Another myth that pisses me off about that era is when the press used those occasional 6/7 million ratings they got head-to-head with Emmerdale and made them out as the norm when average episodes actually rated double that back then. But a lot of people don’t know that either. It’s all the negative media attention that taints people’s memories and conceptions of the Berridge era. Even in the darkest months of 2004 they were still getting 10/11 million viewers per episode and that’s how it stayed up-until about World-Cup ’06 (about 9 to 12 million per episode, sometimes a little more, sometimes 8 million-ish in the summer months from 2005 onwards anyway). Higher than the ratings have been since then, but, again, people have sometimes taken those one-off clashes with Emmerdale (despite the fact that in the Santer era and beyond, clash-episodes were often in the 4s and 5s, but no-one quotes them as the norm) and used them as leverage against years like 2004.
