He had / I think still has (by the looks of it) pretty serious substance abuse problems and still seems to be very, very bitter about how things went for him post-Buffy so I sort of suspect that him and Boreanaz have maybe had a run-in at a previous Comic Con or similar event - with him potentially being off his face and not even remembering what was said - and now Boreanaz refuses to be around him? I sort of get the impression that a few of the cast are uncomfortable around him but are just less vocal about it
