Unless something starts being drawn out, the "general public" (and especially social media) has a very, very short memory. He'd probably even have been back on the beeb in a couple of years, but he's making it worse with the follow-up comments.

the problems are of his own making, first the tweet, then the apology that wasn't an apology but an attack, then the follow up apologies. It's pretty clear from that that he isn't sorry at all, so then anything he comes out with subsequent to that is tainted. I don't care enough about him to give a damn personally, I don't think in general that he is a nice guy, so what goes around comes around
