I don't think it's different to most physical sports though; it's true that only a few will be good enough to make any money but that's true of tennis, football, or any other sport so  . I don't think there are many kids sat at home believing its easy. People are aware that the winners of these things have a level of natural skill at the game that goes beyond just practicing a lot. Also winners tends to be younger because split second differences in reaction times really matter in high-level gaming and reaction times start to drop fast once you hit about 25.
Hard to make a career out of Fortnight alone though (unless he gains a streaming / merchandise following) becaaaause fortnight isn't a purely skill based game, it incorporates a LOT of randomness and luck, so at the top level you wouldn't really expect the same people to consistently win tournaments. Too much down to chance,compared to games based on skill and tactics like CS.
