This will have Shane MacGowan slurring in fury...BBC bosses have banned the word f*g**t from the Pogues' hit Fairytale of New York, to avoid upsetting gays.

Politically correct officials ordered radio DJs to bleep over part of the classic line sung by the late Kirsty MacColl - despite it being bellowed out every Christmas since its release in 1987.

Kirsty, killed by a speedboat in 2000 at 41, sings "You scumbag, you maggot you cheap lousy f*g**t..." as she trades insults with boozy MacGowan on the track, re-released for the festive charts.

The BBC said: "We are playing an edited version that does not include the word f*g**t. It is a word members of our audience would find offensive."

But Pogue fans are furious. One, David Higgins of Liverpool, said: "The singers are bickering, censoring the word defies the object of the track."
