Me and my wife played through this tonight. We got a not toooo bad ending, saved everyone except poor ol' Conrad, who

Spoiler:

fell down an elevator shaft and was impaled after I failed one of the "heartbeat" things hiding from the kissy lady monster. Wups!

I enjoyed it. It was worth the £25, though the ending was good enough that I wouldn't play through again, a fine enough story as is.

The characters also seem to care more about the boat owner Fliss more so than a missing friend.

Most of that was explained, though. The "Manchurian Gold" is the codename for a WW2 chemical weapon that causes extreme hallucinations. Its being transported secretly inside what are supposed to be soldiers' coffins (so no one would tamper with it) but they leaked and the crew all went mad, some killed each other, some killed themselves and some just died of fright / shock. There was no huge monster (or any other monsters or ghosts)... That was just that guys personal hallucination.
