This attitude is devastating to productivity though. I think the confusion comes from the term "unskilled", which in fact more accurately means "without formal qualifications". You can't replace an experienced migrant worker with an unmotivated, slack-jawed local and expect them to work to the same standard. Yes there are plenty of unemployed people in the UK but the ugly elephant in the room that no one seems willing to address, is that many of them are
simply unemployable in MANY "unskilled" roles.
