The president of the Oxford Union announced his resignation on Tuesday evening following widespread criticism of the treatment of a blind student who was dragged out of a debating chamber "by his ankles".

Impeachment proceedings were tabled against Brendan McGrath after Ebenezer Azamati, a postgraduate student, was forcefully removed from a debate.

Mr Azamati arrived early to the debate to reserve a seat but was denied entry upon his return from dinner. A video circulated online shows him attempting to resume his seat but being dragged off the chair and out of the room by security.

Students launched impeachment proceedings against Mr McGrath on Tuesday morning claiming he failed to prevent Azamati from being forcibly removed from the chamber and failed to investigate his staff’s actions.

The impeachment proposers also claimed Mr McGrath publicly accused Mr Azamati of violent conduct, wasted union funds on an ‘unfair disciplinary’ hearing and failed to apologise for the whole incident.

On Monday, Oxford University said the treatment of Mr Azamati went beyond “our culture of inclusivity and tolerance”.

..it would make absolute sense for a disabled/blind person to arrive early to ensure a seat...he had no familiarity with the venue...so these things will always need planning/preparation and avoiding crowds...crowds, I would imagine...would be quite scary for him...and then to arrive back and be removed from his seat by physical force...terrifying ...I’m so glad that the wrongs have been rightfully recognised and apologised for unreservedly...
