I think people give BB8 a hard time, lets face it, it wasn't going to be mind-blowing TV after CBB5. I think people had an impression of what they wanted and when it didn't live up to there expectations they slated it - which isn't BB fault.
Big Brother 8 was, IMO, a good series. It gave us some good housemates in the form of Brian, Charley, Nicky, Gerry, Samanda, Seany, Carole, Chanelle, Ziggy - All who provided good TV with arguments, laughter and much more. We also had some controversy with Emily and a gripping romance. We had a world first and original twist with Fake Week and the all female house was something that was never done before in BB around the world. I think it had a good mix of arguments and laughter. I think like all series it had it's faults - some being the loss of the Saturday HL's, change in the schedule, and the other being too many housemates.
BB8 didn't do disastrous in the ratings, as some people may have you believe. The series average is around 3.7 million, which is good seeing as BB8 did have a lot competition over the summer, with Britain's Got Talent, The Apprentice, Match of the Day Live.
For me, the best part of BB8 was that for once in the long time we had a unpredictable BB. It was weeks and weeks before people had a good idea of who would win (Amanda & Sam) and even then it proved wrong when Brian won the series. In BB7, it was obvious who would be evicted every single week - but it wasn't like that in BB8. I mean, Charley is an example - every week people thought she would be nominated but she manged to avoid nominated for five weeks.
