The grid isn't capable of handling full electric and the government seem to keep kicking that little stumbling block into the long grass.

Problem 1) Parts of the grid need modernised so that charging points can be installed without overloading the local supply.

Problem 2) While the UK generates enough energy to charge a full nation of electric cars, that assessment has been made based on the raw numbers. The reality is that there will be far less charging happening from 9am - 5pm, and then a massive surge in requirements between around 5.30pm - 7pm when people get home from work and plug in. Like the old "ad break" problem when everyone turned on their kettles at once.
