I doubt it was less appropriate than casually making a racist "joke"... it's doubtful that someone who feels comfortable doing that, would be in any way offended by what I said. If they were, I'd have another name for them.

That's exactly what you did, though, you fat shamed her by calling her a derogatory term referring to her weight. Skinny shaming exists as well, btw. But I'll leave it there and just say that I'm reminded why I didn't stay active here when seeing things like that.
