They just repeatedly say that it's a normal thing to do on holiday, even though 99% of other parents are like "What???". They just say again that it's normal and anyone would do it.

We actually went to Portugal when my kids were 4 and 2... The furthest we went was lying out on the balcony of the villa at night looking at the stars when they were asleep in the next room. Granted, being in The Algarve with two small kids, we did have the Maddie cautionary tale on our minds, but I don't know any parent who would actually go out for dinner at any distance and leave their kids alone. As is frequently pointed out - so many things could happen. What if there was a fire? Etc.

Its no different to a parent in the UK leaving their kids at home and going to the pub at the end of the street. No one would try to justify that.
