It doesn't cost that much, and without it we'd have nothing to laugh at come May-time. Plus Terry Wogan's sarcasm would go to waste.
Actually it does cost a lot of money to stage, especially now there is a semi-final as well. Most Eastern European TV stations have a limited budget( It nearly bankrupted the Latvians in 2003). Without the western funding the contest could not happen. It would teach them not to bite the hand that feeds you.
