I think that's quite unfair. Initially I believe people were in a state of shock at what was happening in the country, normal life had stopped and people were feeling lost and vulnerable and believed that the clap was their small way of showing gratitude. I agree it was hijacked and almost commercialised like everything is in this country and stopped being about anything other than Boris having an opportunity to stand and be filmed on the steps of Number 10.
