It lead to a massive priority being placed on the development and stockpiling of ever-higher-yield nuclear weapons because M.A.D. was the only way to ensure against nuclear weapons being used to secure total global domination.
The constant anxiety of the Cold War lead to nuclear deproliferation programs around the world (note: not even the same thing as disarmament).
