Megan Thee Stallion has responded to the backlash her hit song “WAP” has received from right-wing politicians.
Since it was released in August, the track, a collaboration with Cardi B, has been condemned by Republican politicians and right-wing pundits for its explicit lyrics and music video.
Being interviewed by TIME to mark her spot on the TIME 100, Megan revealed that she was shocked at the controversy her track had stirred among politicians.
The rapper said: “When I saw all of the politicians in an uproar about mine and Cardi’s ‘WAP’, I was just really taken aback.”
“Like, why is this your focus right now? If you have an issue with what I’m saying don’t listen to it. Tune out, ’cause I didn’t ask you to tune in,” she said.
Less than 24 hours after its release, James P Bradley, a Republican congressional candidate from California tweeted: “Cardi B & Megan Thee Stallion are what happens when children are raised without God and without a strong father figure.”
On the same day, DeAnna Lorraine, a conservative commentator and ex-Republican congressional candidate, tweeted: “Cardi B & Megan Thee Stallion just set the entire female gender back by 100 years with their disgusting & vile ‘WAP’ song.” She added: “The Democrats support this trash and depravity!”
When Conservative commentator Candace Owens appeared on The Ben Shapiro Show earlier this month, the two pundits lambasted the newly released song and its creators. Owens called Cardi “dumb and illiterate”.
