It's really always been an illusion, that "hard work will get you rich". While I do believe that hard work and avoiding running into BAD luck is likely to get people to a place of being at least comfortable... there's just no path to actual wealth that doesn't involve dumb luck or nepotism. It's basically people in the 20th century operating on a 17th century philosophy that was sprinkled into the roots of the nation. I think they'll always believe it. Their entire culture was grown out of that idea.
