I think that is slightly misrepresenting the truth.
I don't think anyone had an issue with talking about where the virus originated, I think the issue was how it was being used to absolve ineffectual right wing populist governments of blame for their response.
Saying that Ebola started in Africa is not racist, but calling it dirty darky organ bleeding, is. China wasn't being used in any other way than in the pejorative sense, such as evil china virus or kung flu.
