I think it's more than just an "ignore it for the sake of the economy" thing. China have ~260 nuclear warheads, Nazi Germany did not, and the idea of apocalyptic outcomes to war were not really within reach the last time an alliance of countries stood up to another.
The race for nuclear armament might have brought about a weird stalemate during the Cold War, but it's now resulted in a grim bargaining chip that can be dangled whenever one of those countries are inconvenienced in their crimes against humanity.
