I can understand the cynicism (and that this might just be a ploy for a pay-rise) but:
1) he's got 3 years on this contract... they're not exactly under pressure to get him to sign a new one
2) the "goodbye" element of the game against Villa was palpable... I don't think you do a lap of the ground and applaud the fans if you think you're just going to end up staying
If he does end up staying, it'll be because no one can afford him and Spurs are pulling some shady tactics behind the scenes. They could do with his transfer fee: their defence is a shambles and they'll obviously have to snap up a decent striker to replace him (I could see them going for someone like Bamford?)
