Default China: Uighur sites are being bulldozed and built over

[Sky News has uncovered evidence showing
the extent to which Uighur sites are being bulldozed
and built over as part of China's efforts to
change the autonomous region they come from.

Among the monuments to the past which
have been replaced are cemeteries,
religious buildings and typical architecture.]

China Will have to Kick this reporter out
as he has found what they are doing.

[By Tom Cheshire, Sky News Asia correspondent

Tarwizim Cemetery in Hotan, Xinjiang,
was "not that big but many people – our relatives – had
their loved ones buried there," Mergube said.
She didn't want her surname to be used because
she is afraid of the consequences of speaking publicly.
"Some of the burial sites were flat, some had domes
with ornaments, there were trees in it.
In the summer they would bring flowers
to the tombs. That is what I remember," she told us.

Mergube grew up in Hotan and is Uighur.
She and her family fled China in 2016, fearing for
their safety as Uighurs started to be detained
in greater numbers by the Chinese authorities.
Her grandfather was buried in Tarwizim Cemetery.
After they left China, her family heard the
graveyard had been destroyed.]
