Many moons ago, my wife saw an ad in the London Evening Standard for a round trip from London Waterloo to Penzance on a sleeper train, returning anytime within 3 or 4 days by regular train, but going into Paddington.
It wasn’t a fortune, so on a whim I bought two tickets.
The sleeper train was great, I made sure of a good night’s sleep by wrapping myself around many glasses of vodka.
We arrived in Penzance around 08.00 I think, and found a diner for some scrambled eggs and ham.
Then we just strolled around the town kind of aimlessly, eventually ending up in a pub, (as usual).
My wife wanted to get a bus to Lands End or somewhere, but not having seen a red double-decker bus or black cab for a while, I was getting withdrawal symptoms, so we took a train back around 14.00 or 15.00.
It took five hours plus, and although I found little wrong with Cornwall, I felt like kissing the ground at Paddington.
