I see that a member of the UK Independence party took Gordon Brown to court last week over the government promising a referendum on the European Constitution in its election manifesto of 2005.This promise was obviously broken so this guy decided to take the case to court.
It lasted a very short time after a government lawyer said that "manifesto pledges are not subject to legitimate expectation".
So there we have it, in a court of law it's proven that we might as well take the government promises with a pinch of salt.
